Christien De Paepe

Biography
Christien De Paepe, in origin a professional photographer, got interested in the great classical painting traditions of the Flemish and Dutch 17th century (Rembrandt, Rubens, Van Dijck e.g.) about two decennia ago, and consequently followed an eight year academic course on the specific, elaborate, oil painting techniques then used.
Her paintings now are modern executions of these glorious skills she studied in detail. The subjects evolve around the search for identity and the tensions of multiculturality in our modern world. At the same time, she questions uncritical group behaviour and progressive individualism.
In 2011 she started to exhibit her work in multiple group expositions in Flanders and her paintings were also represented by the Antwerp gallery PjezUnik.
In 2019 she moved to Greyton, South Africa where she continued to paint and evolved into new domains and explosive artistic maturity. The African skies have been great creatively.
Her works are mainly found in private collections in Belgium, the Netherlands and Italy. All works are multilayered oil paintings painted with classical techniques. She creates twelve paintings per year all focussing on a pre-determined theme.
